Wax Digital eProcurement helps Play.com deliver record growth
Wax Digital eProcurement has helped Play.com to achieve a record Christmas trading period - 24% year-on-year growth in sales over the Christmas holiday 2008.
Play.com’s ability to stay ahead of the game and achieve such growth has been supported by an on-demand eProcurement system from Wax Digital that powers the £400m e-tailer’s direct purchasing activities, enabling the buying team to forecast and meet demand on over 7 million product lines.
The system generates a daily ‘buy sheet’ for each category specialist, presenting a tailored view of recommended products and volumes for purchase and using a traffic light system to highlight urgent stock replenishments, allowing the Play.com team to manage extensive product portfolios. Buy sheets can be rapidly filtered, reviewed and amended as required, before orders are submitted electronically direct on suppliers.
The Wax Digital solution is instrumental in helping Play's purchasing team to accurately weigh seasonal shifts in demand, historical buying trends and stock levels, ensuring that stock levels are optimised to meet the demands of our 9 million strong consumer base.

During a Christmas period that has seen some of the high street’s biggest brands suffer significant sales falls, Play.com continues to go from strength to strength.
“At Christmas more than any other time for an online retailer, Play.com has to be able to rely on our systems to balance demand against adequate levels of stock, and not be left with costly shortfalls or excesses,” said Daniel Ball, Director, Wax Digital.
“In a competitive online environment consumers look at price vs. availability and are able to shop around quickly and easily. People simply don’t wait for items to return to stock.
“Wax Digital Forecasting, one of the solution modules delivered as part of the Play.com implementation, displays graphical charts that overlay historical data with forecasts to create a visual aid to purchase decision-making for buyers. And because the whole process is automated, including supplier transactions, the time from recognising a need to a supplier receiving an order is counted in hours.”
The Wax Digital system integrates seamlessly with Play.com’s ecommerce website, warehouse management system and Oracle financials.
